Buried Alive…Or the (it seems, futile) Attempt to Organize My Bookcases

by Ann-Katrina

It started one day as I lay staring at my burgeoning bookcases. Something needed to be done…and fast.

Burgeoning Bookcase

In a fit of excitement, I pulled all the books from their resting places and piled them on the floor.

Sample of the Book Pile

Mission: catalog and alphabetize. That was before I realized that I have a lot of books.

Ant's Eye View of the Book Pile

So far, from the first four shelves, there are 319 books:

  • 202 fiction
  • 20 non-fiction
  • 46 reference
  • 11 graphic novels
  • 20 expendable

And I still have three more book cases to go (two with five shelves and one with four). <sarcasm>Whoopee!!</sarcasm> But I will not be deterred.

There’s a system. I’m not doing this for nothing. There is some sort of system, right? Please tell me there is. How else do you manage to keep all your books from eating you alive?!?

Good luck! I did this over winter break and it took me all day. I only organized by size, but I ended up dusting/cleaning all my books off because they had been in the same place for a while ;p

My books are organized by genre and then whether or not they are a series. I stopped trying to alphabetize them when it became a hassle to continuously move novels so that everything could be in the right order. I do keep my signed copies separate from all my others though.

Easiest way to get completely and totally organized – buy an ereader and go digital. :P

    Thanks for the support ladies.

She, I love the idea of organizing based on size. Maybe I should give some thought to that…

Jackie, you have just said what I was worried about…what happens when I get new books (which does happen quite a bit)? I see two possibilities: 1) I’ll be forced to be ruthless about the books I will keep; or 2) I will pull out all of my hair from frustration because I’ll need to reorganize every other day. *sigh*

I don’t know if I can organize by genre though because I have so many of them that it would be a pain in the arse.

And you’re right…it looks like the only way to be completely organized (and even then it’s hit or miss) is by going digital, but I love the feel of an actual book in my hands and the feel of the paper as I flip the pages. :/ ah well. One day the perfect solution will arise. I’m hopeful.
